The October release of the EP 4 Divine Virtues topped off a busy month for the south Louisiana born “Voodoo Rock n’ Roll” group called Green Mantles. A handful of Louisiana and Mississippi shows and Halloween themed jams showcased the band doing with they do best as the falling leaves and cooler nights beckoned people out to enjoy some live music during the spooky season.
They’re a band with a rare type of sound, especially in our area. Peppy drums, funky basslines and clean, restrained singing mesh with a guitar sound that’s warm, crunchy and alive with reverb to bring together a very organic, early rock inspired tone. Add their songwriting sensibilities into the mix and you get a band that goes anywhere from danceworthy bops to ominous sounding ambience and hard grooves, sometimes even at the same time.
4 Divine Virtues presents all of this in the Green Mantles’ vintage-sounding recording style and features a combination of brand new material and some previously unreleased material dating as far back as the early 2000s. The title track kicks the release off with their signature drum and bass groove and atmospheric guitar picking, and the track “Fading Whispers,” one I particularly enjoy, closes it out with some straight up, hard driving punk rock action.
The new EP, however, is only the tip of the iceberg for those exploring the band’s recent releases. Green Mantles have historically had music available on SoundCloud as well as other limited platforms and physical releases, but were not on the major music platforms such as Amazon, Apple and Spotify. This changed in 2022 with the near simultaneous release of a full catalog of music to the platforms; a release which coincidentally happened right around the time of the band’s 20th anniversary.
