Emo Orchestra and The Spill Canvas Live at Beau Rivage: A Symphonic Experience

May 15th @ Beau Rivage

One of the defining genres of the new millennium is being reimagined and brought to life in the most theatrical of fashions. Blending iconic hits with all the grandeur and… emotion… of a live symphony orchestra, Emo Orchestra brings to the stage over a dozen classical instrumentalists combined with the rock sounds of The Spill Canvas for a unique spectacle.

“It’s so much different,” said singer Nick Thomas of The Spill Canvas about heading out on the current tour. They’ve been on the scene for over twenty years and are known for top jams such as “All over You” and “Our Song,” and are serving as the band for this year’s iteration of the orchestra, which tours at different times with different established bands from the genre. The two entities meld into a massive stage show, performing a range of emo hits as one. It “has been a massive undertaking, and a fun challenge,” Nick said. “We’re playing songs that, I guess you could consider them emo standards, or staples from the genre that you would hear at ’emo night’ or something like that.” Selections from bands like Fallout Boy, Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, or My Chemical Romance are all right at home in the show, which is often broken into two 45 minute sets with an intermission.

The show includes The Spill Canvas’ original music, reimagined with the orchestral flair backing the drums and amps. “We’ve grown with them, they’re a part of our DNA…” Nick said of performing the band’s long standing songs in a new way. “That’s something that’s just so beautiful to hear.”

“When you get this newer, modern kind of genre that emo embodies and then you combine that with this older, very in its own right, emotional kind of musical form… string arrangements and those movements can be extremely moving and emotional in their own right. The combination in my opinion works so well especially because you just have a lot of lyrical content, the melodic content that lends itself to be expanded upon within these kind of older archetypes for music where orchestra kind of meets this modern thing, and I think it’s a perfect pairing for sure.”

Aside from the tour, Nick says The Spill Canvas have been working up some new music ideas and plan to hit the studio soon.

Beau Rivage is rolling out the black carpet for this one, so to speak, and you’re invited to participate in some pre-show and night-of festivities. Eyeliner and hair straighteners optional, of course. On May 7th and 14th from 5 to 8 PM, LUX Lounge will be offering chances to win autographed The Spill Canvas swag, VIP Tickets for the show and pre-show meet & greet passes with conductor Evan Rogers.

On show night from 6 to midnight, LUX Lounge will host “Midnight Crescendo,” an immersive, interactive guest experience specially themed for the night and featuring highlights such as a “write your last lyric” wall, “pick your fate” cards, and a Polaroid station with branded frames.

From Beau Rivage:

“The evening will also include a curated music progression from the Opening Movement, the Overture, Intermission Flow, the Crescendo, and the Decrescendo to embrace the mood for the Emo Orchestra and The Spill Canvas performance.

During this unique candlelight atmosphere, signature cocktails will be available, including The Crescendo made with blackberry gin, lavender and shimmer; the Minor Key Mule, a vodka, lime and ginger beer concoction with a black rim; Eclipse Espresso Martini, a dark chocolate espresso drink; the Nocturne Negroni, a black amaro, gin and rosemary cocktail; and the Fallen Strings Shot, made with raspberry, tequila and citrus foam.”
