Paul Cauthen: The Outlaw Crooner Carving His Own Lane

We touched on some of the new things happening in the industry, including that genre-bend that’s happening more and more.

PC: “You know, a lot of people in the mainstream are doing the things I do, but I think the things I do just come from a genuine authentic place. I just feel like, as an artist, I just try to be unapologetically myself.”

We touched on a little of his journey in the music industry. He’s played the Opry, collaborated with powerhouses of the industry, but I especially enjoyed the way he spoke on those experiences. There was a candor to the reality of working to make it in the music industry, but he didn’t seem discouraged or put out at all.

PC: “It’s been a slower burn for me, against the grain kind of thing in this whole business. You know some people love me, some people hate me. I love them all.”

To wrap up, I asked him one of my favorite questions; If you were in a bar brawl and could have any country legend to back you up, who are you calling?

No hesitation.

PC: “Randy Houser.” We laughed a lot, talked a little more about our favorite musicians, and exchanged a few road stories before signing off. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on as he keeps moving and shaking. With every performance, Cauthen invites listeners into a world where tradition and rebellion coexist. In a time when country music is often boxed in by expectation, Paul Cauthen is kicking the doors wide open. It would be a disservice to call him an up-and-comer, but it feels good to say it seems his storytelling talent is starting to pay off and I hope to catch him headlining the big show soon.
