Sweetie: Live Across the Coast

“I was just so enamored with how amazing putting a band together is… I just dug my heels in the sand and said ‘I’m gonna start a band.”

That was Zackery Perkins’ simple resolution back in 2022, when he decided to make the move from being a primarily solo performer into trying something new. It was a move that led to what has since become one of this year’s most intriguing new gulf coast bands.

Sweetie are a rock/R&B trio with a unique blended sound and colorful personality. The band’s recent “The Summer We Didn’t Suck” run saw them performing dozens of shows across the coast and beyond, bringing full length performances that included a variety of new songs and beloved cover tunes, many of which are Sweetie’s own reimagined versions. The band won fans over quickly with their music and charm as Sweetie grew into its own identity which, according to them, is all based on the bond between the members.

That little bit of magic was what Perkins had been looking for when he first began venturing to put together a live band. It was around that time that bassist and singer Simon Palmer had left her day job to pursue a full time music career, and that common goal and friendship between the two made the decision to go in on a band together an easy one. Drummer Jonathan Lee, who Perkins had known as a passionate and dedicated player from past experiences, was the perfect choice to complete the trio.
