Nestled in the heart of Biloxi, Desporte’s Seafood is more than just a seafood market and restaurant—it’s a cornerstone of Gulf Coast culture. For over a century, this family-run establishment has been a trusted source for the freshest seafood, passing down their commitment to quality and community through five generations. In a region where seafood isn’t just a meal but a way of life, Desporte’s has become a symbol of the enduring traditions that define the Gulf Coast.
“Desporte’s Seafood is one of the oldest seafood companies in the United States.” Says Sean Desporte, owner of Desporte’s Seafood. “We’ve been in business over 130 years, I’m the fifth generation to take over the seafood business. What we do is, we try to treat people like family. It’s not just a business where we sell stuff. We just want everybody to feel comfortable and know that they get the freshest local seafood around.”
Walking into Desporte’s, you’re greeted by the unmistakable scent of the sea and the sight of glistening, freshly caught shrimp, fish, and oysters. Their market is a haven for seafood lovers, offering everything from plump Gulf shrimp to tender fillets of just about any fish imaginable. For those who prefer their seafood ready to eat, Desporte’s also offers rich, hearty gumbo by the gallon—an ideal way to bring the flavors of the Gulf into your home. Whether you’re stocking up for a family feast or grabbing a quick meal, their selection speaks to the abundance of the waters just beyond Biloxi’s shores.
What sets Desporte’s apart, though, is its dual role as both a market and a restaurant. The casual dining area is as authentic as it gets, serving up classic po-boys and other regional specialties. True to their promise, if it’s in their market, they’ll cook it up for you, ensuring every meal is as fresh as possible. Whether you’re biting into a shrimp po-boy piled high with golden, crispy shrimp or savoring the delicate flavors of grilled fish, every dish is a testament to the quality of their seafood and the expertise of their team.
“Our retail market, for all the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, we have fresh crabmeat, clawfingers, claw meat. We have fresh shrimp, peeled shrimp, we also have gumbo and etouffee. We also can make baskets for people for the holidays. We will do just about anything to make anyone happy. We have lobsters, we have crawfish, we have boiled crabs and boiled shrimp. We have the best local cocktail sauce and remoulade sauce.”
Desporte’s isn’t just a place to grab a meal or stock up on fresh catch—it’s a living piece of Gulf Coast heritage. For locals and visitors alike, it offers a taste of what makes this area special: unparalleled seafood, warm hospitality, and a deep connection to the sea. It’s no wonder Desporte’s has been a beloved institution for over 100 years, and it’s clear they’ll continue to be for generations to come.
“We treat people like family, and they enjoy our freshest local seafood. They walk in and they know they’re going to be treated right and they’re going to get local seafood instead of import seafood. Everyone knows what they’re going to get when they come in to my business.”
If you’re in Biloxi and want to experience a true taste of the Gulf Coast, Desporte’s Seafood is an essential stop. Here, every bite is steeped in tradition, and every visit feels like coming home.
