The first thing you notice inside The Project Lounge is how dark it is. I mean really dark. Your eyes need a moment to adjust, and then the room starts revealing itself: the red glow of neon, old posters and license plates, dollar bills signed by people who have stopped in over the years, and a popcorn machine waiting near the bar.
Then you hear the grill.
Tucked off Iberville Drive in Biloxi, The Project Lounge has been serving the Coast since 1976. It has the feel of a place that knows exactly what it is. The lighting is low, the space is cozy, and the food is cooked right there by the bar where you can watch it happen. You can come in for lunch, settle in with a cold drink, or grab a late-night bite. Either way, the grill is the center of attention.
We came hungry and tried the hamburger, the steak burger, and the grilled tuna steak. I had heard plenty about the burgers before our visit. When a place has been known for them for decades, you want to find out whether they live up to the talk. The hamburger delivered exactly what I hoped for: a satisfying, no-frills burger that made sense of why people keep recommending this spot.
But the tuna steak was the surprise of the visit. I know this sounds strange, but it tasted so much like a hamburger that I almost couldn’t believe I was eating tuna. It was so good. If you usually walk into a burger spot and order the same thing every time, let this be your sign to give the tuna a chance.
The steak burger gave us another reason to understand The Project Lounge’s following. This isn’t a place trying to dress dinner up into something complicated. The appeal is watching your food come off the grill and enjoying it in a room that feels unmistakably Biloxi.
And that room is part of the experience. The signed dollar bills make you wonder how many celebrations, ordinary lunches, late nights, and first visits these walls have seen. The posters and license plates give you something new to notice as your eyes adjust. Even the darkness, which caught me off guard when we first walked in, began to feel like part of the place. I can’t imagine The Project Lounge brightly lit. It just wouldn’t be the same.
There’s free popcorn to snack on while you wait, and the menu sticks with what people come here for: burgers, the longtime favorite ribeye steak sandwich, grilled tuna, and simple sides. The burger-and-soda lunch special was listed at $10 when we visited, giving you an easy excuse to stop by in the middle of the day. At the other end of the clock, the lounge lists hours from 11 a.m. to 4 a.m., so the same grill that handles lunch can be there for a much later craving.
It would be easy to pass up a place like this if you judged it by the outside or expected a polished dining room. Step inside, though, and you get something different: a dark little Biloxi hangout where the food has earned a reputation and the atmosphere has had decades to become its own thing. You might go for the burger everyone talks about. You might end up telling your friends about the tuna steak instead.
For me, that’s what makes The Project Lounge worth sharing. It has been here since 1976, yet my favorite part of visiting was discovering something I didn’t expect. We went in knowing about the burgers. We left talking about how a tuna steak managed to taste like one.
When Cruisin’ the Coast brings visitors through Biloxi, The Project Lounge feels like the kind of local stop worth finding between all the cars and activity. Come in for a burger, look over the dollar bills covering the walls, and experience a place that has been here since 1976. Football season gives you another reason to pull up a seat: grab some popcorn, order from the grill, and watch the game in a lounge that feels lived in rather than staged for visitors. Whether you’re cruising the Coast or cheering on your team, this is a little piece of Biloxi to add to the day.
