In the upcoming Mardi Gras festivities, the Krewe of Salacia promises to captivate spectators with not just one, but two dazzling floats. Each float will showcase a distinct and fabulous Salacia style, adding an extra layer of excitement and visual delight to the parade. The commitment to excellence and originality in their presentation is, in part, a mark left by Salacia Dress creator Christina Roberts.
“Each dress takes about one to two hours to make. I’ve done about 78 for this year.” Says Roberts. “I’m excited to see how happy everyone is when they finally get their dress and they get to participate. It’s a lot of fun.”
“I love the glitz, the glam, I love the fact that it’s a bigger crew. I love the fact that we have these huge floats like New Orleans.” Says Salacia member Dana Hardy. “It’s all gonna be worth it whenever I find somebody out in the crowd that seems like they”re really pumped to get a top and I can be like ‘woo! Here’s your top!’”
Beyond the glitz and glamour, the Krewe of Salacia holds a special place in the hearts of the community. The enthusiasm and adoration they receive from the community underscore the positive impact they have made, making them a beloved fixture in the local Mardi Gras tradition.
“I’m so excited, I love Mardi Gras and everything about it.” Says Float Captain Kari Manley. “This is my second year with Salacia and I love it. It’s a great group of women who love each other and support each other. It’s a true sisterhood.”
“We’re just like a family.” Says Sonja Gillis, marcher. “I love that.”
As the Krewe of Salacia prepares to roll through the streets of Biloxi, marchers at the front with lighted jelly fish on poles, anticipation builds for a spectacle that combines tradition, pomp, and a powerful display of female creativity. The legacy of the Krewe of Salacia as the leading all-female parading krewe in South Mississippi continues to shine brightly, enchanting all who are fortunate enough to witness their Mardi Gras magic.
