Many people on the Mississippi Gulf Coast know Robert Wiles for his 38 years with U.S. Foods. Others know him for his passion for aviation and for the way he shares that passion with everyone around him. I recently had the opportunity to spend an unforgettable day with him, and I left inspired.
The first thing that stood out to me about Robert wasn’t the airplane — it was his hangar. Everything was spotless, organized, and intentional. The floor was clean, the tools were neatly arranged, and the aircraft looked as if it had been treated with genuine care and respect. Walking into that space immediately told me something about Robert. His attention to detail and pride in his work were obvious, setting the tone for the entire day.
Robert welcomed my mom, Mary Cracchiolo, and me with warmth and humility, even though it was clear he held himself to incredibly high standards. Seeing how carefully he maintained his hangar showed me that aviation is about much more than flying. It’s about discipline, responsibility, and doing things the right way even when no one is watching. That level of professionalism made a strong impression on both of us.
Once we were in the air, Robert’s calm confidence matched everything we had already seen on the ground. He flew smoothly and comfortably, explaining things along the way and making us feel completely safe. For my mom especially, that confidence mattered. Watching Robert in control — both in his space and in the cockpit — showed her the kind of person he is, someone you trust without hesitation.
“I truly love introducing people to aviation,” said Robert. “No matter where they are in life. I love seeing the excitement in people when they experience flying for the first time, and that excitement continues to fuel my own passion for aviation. Flying is like taking a ‘magic carpet’ ride, where the noise of the day disappears the moment the airplane leaves the ground.” Signs in his hangar read “Aviation is my happy place,” and whether flying for work, taking friends on trips, visiting his daughter in Huntsville, or simply “burning holes in the sky,” his love for flying is genuine and contagious.
Robert spoke about the friendships aviation has brought into his life. He enjoys spending time with fellow pilots at fly-ins, regional aviation events, crawfish boils, and major gatherings like Sun ’n Fun. His generosity extends beyond recreation as well. Robert shared stories about fellow aviator Dr. Scott Smith and his dog rescue flights and how he introduced Emily Milburn to aviation, and she went on to receive a scholarship for flight training. He loves opening doors for future pilots, and listening to his stories showed me how aviation can positively impact lives far beyond the cockpit.

When I asked Robert what he would recommend to someone interested in aviation, his answer was simple: go to an airshow and start watching aviation content online. He believes exposure to the aviation community is one of the best ways to spark curiosity and inspire future pilots.

The flight itself was incredible, but what stayed with me most was the example Robert set. His influence went beyond aviation. He showed us what dedication looks like and how far discipline and hard work can take you.
That day helped shape the way I see my future. Robert’s example reinforced my desire to become a pilot, not only for the thrill of flying, but for the responsibility and pride that come with it.
I’m incredibly grateful to Robert Wiles — not just for the flight, but for the influence he had on me. His standards, generosity, and leadership by example turned an amazing day into a lesson I’ll never forget.
