Rags to Riches: Bay St. Louis’ Beachfront Gathering Place for Food, Music, and Coastal Nights

On Beach Boulevard in Bay St. Louis, where the Gulf breeze rolls in and beach days often blur into sunset evenings, Rags to Riches has carved out a space that feels like a natural extension of the coast itself. What started as a shared vision between Shane and Amy Bernard, alongside their business partner Craig Bordelon, has grown into one of the city’s most recognizable waterfront destinations.

The concept was simple but intentional to create a true beachside sports bar and gathering place where people could step off the sand, grab a drink, catch the game, and stay awhile. Bay St. Louis already had its share of fine dining and seafood-forward restaurants, but there was a gap for something more relaxed. A place where families, locals, and visitors could all meet in the middle. Rags to Riches filled that space with a blend of Cajun-inspired comfort food, coastal energy, and nonstop entertainment.

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere reflects that vision. The space is designed to flow between indoor seating, open-air patio tables, and balcony views overlooking the Gulf. Each level offers a slightly different experience downstairs brings the energy with live music, sports on every screen, and a steady hum of conversation, while the upper level leans more relaxed, offering breezes, cocktails, and an elevated view of the water.

It’s the kind of place where no two visits feel exactly the same.

On a recent visit, I started with the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail, a simple but standout dish that lets the freshness of the seafood speak for itself. That was followed by Amy’s Fresh Fit Salad topped with seared tuna, a lighter option that was still satisfying, especially in the middle of a warm Gulf Coast afternoon. To finish, the Signature Shark Punch brought a bright, tropical sweetness that fit the setting perfectly, efreshing, slightly bold, and built for a beachside crowd.

The menu at Rags to Riches is built around that same balance of comfort and creativity. It’s not trying to be overly complicated it’s meant to be shared, enjoyed, and paired with conversation. Guests can start with items like Bang Bang Shrimp, crispy and tossed in a signature sauce over a slaw base, or JJ’s Spring Rolls, a Korean style pork Roll served with Chili sauce and crumbled queso.

The Wings, featuring Large Oven Roasted Wings which are then flash fried and served with your favorite sauce, has quickly become a standout favorite for those looking for something simple and tasty. Meanwhile, the loaded Rag’s Famous Fries topped with steak or barbacoa, queso, pico de gallo, and cilantro crema lean fully into indulgent coastal comfort food.

For heartier meals, the menu ranges from Hearty Homestyle and classic burgers to Southern Fried Baskets featuring shrimp, flounder, or chicken. The Fin-Tastic Flounder Sandwich brings a crispy, coastal take on a classic po’boy-style favorite, while Craig’s Coastal Tacos allow guests to mix and match proteins like shrimp, pork belly, steak, chicken, or barbacoa, all layered with fresh toppings and slaw.

Behind the bar, Rags to Riches leans just as heavily into personality. Signature cocktails like the Margarita El Fuego, with its jalapeño kick, bring heat and citrus together in a way that matches the Gulf Coast vibe. The Beachy Peachy keeps things light and fruity, while the Rum Smuggler and Shark Punch offer stronger tropical blends that have become crowd favorites for long afternoons that turn into late nights.

But what has truly elevated Rags to Riches into a local staple is its role as an entertainment hub.

Recently voted Best Sports Bar and Best Karaoke Venue at the Covey Awards, the venue has built a reputation that extends far beyond its food menu. On any given night, the space can shift from laid-back lunch spot to high-energy game-day destination to full karaoke stage where the crowd becomes part of the performance.

Weekly programming plays a big role in that identity. Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., drawing in both locals winding down after work and visitors taking a break from the beach. Every Wednesday, Steak Night takes over the menu, offering an 8-ounce filet served with loaded mashed potatoes and a side salad for $18, available open to close. As the evening progresses, the energy builds with karaoke starting at 7 p.m., a weekly tradition that consistently draws a crowd and keeps the atmosphere lively late into the night.

Looking ahead, Rags to Riches is also preparing for one of its biggest seasonal events the Fourth of July Bash featuring DJ Richie Rich, expected to bring a full waterfront celebration of music, dancing, and Gulf Coast nightlife right to the heart of Bay St. Louis.

What makes Rags to Riches stand out most, though, is not just the menu or the events, it’s the way it reflects the rhythm of the coast. It’s a place where beach days don’t end when the sun goes down, where a quick stop can turn into hours of conversation, and where visitors get a real taste of what coastal living feels like when it’s done right.

Whether it’s live music, game day energy, karaoke nights, or simply a quiet moment on the balcony overlooking the Gulf, Rags to Riches has become more than a restaurant. It’s a gathering place built around the idea that the best coastal memories are made when good food, good people, and good views come together in one spot.
