WORDS BY: CANONBLUE LALLEY
In a landscape where country music often finds itself split between radio-friendly gloss and nostalgic purism, Paul Cauthen charges in unapologetically outlaw and unmistakably original.
Blending the grit of outlaw country with the swagger of rock ‘n’ roll and a theatrical flair reminiscent of vintage Elvis, Cauthen is more than just a singer, his a full-bodied experience. His voice, deep and commanding, rolls over lyrics like thunder across West Texas plains, while the production behind him weaves in elements of gospel, soul, and old-school honky-tonk.
It’s not hard to hear the echoes of legends in his sound. There’s a flash of Elvis in his baritone bravado, a touch of Roy Orbison’s soulful vulnerability, and a modern, genre-blurring mystique akin to Orville Peck. But Cauthen is never imitating; his lyrics are layered and gritty, voice full of conviction, he distills these influences into something wholly his own. That result is a sound that’s rebellious yet rooted, raw but refined. Despite the heat, he was one of our most anticipated acts of last weekend. We missed the chance to catch up with Paul at the Sand In My Boots Festival down in Gulf Shores, but he was kind enough to give us a phoner early Tuesday morning from his home out in East Texas.
