Huck’s Cove: A Little Slice of Heaven

Here’s a truth we all know to be solid in its foundation, that sometimes the very best experiences are a little off of the beaten path. In Guatier set amongst a heavily wooded area and against the water of the bay sits Huck’s Cove, an oasis of peace and relaxation during the hot Summer months. Here you can come by boat or by car, pull up and grab an exceptional piece of fish and a cold drink while enjoying a laid back atmosphere and comfortably shaded outside area which brings a certain peace to the mind and heart. This, truly, is one of the very best experiences.

“I’ve been here seven years,” says Rebecca Hook, General Manager. “We’re located on the water so we get both boat access and car access. We have an open bar and great hamburgers. We have catfish, grouper, and redfish. We have alligator, and crawfish. It all comes fried, grilled, or blackened on a salad, poboy, or basket.”

For my meal I asked the head chef, Yamil, for his recommendation and he told me his favorite was the blackened redfish. At his advice I decided to order it, and typically I am much more of a catfish fan. Rarely do I ever order redfish but please, dear reader, know that I do not exaggerate when I say that this redfish came cooked to a tender perfection. It was seasoned and blackened beautifully, visually appealing to the eyes and in its flavor endlessly appealing to the stomach. It came in a basket with fries and some of the best hushpuppies I’ve had in a long time. It was also served with a remoulade and while it was tangy and delicious I felt no need to use it on the fish, being that it was so delectably prepared in its initial presentation. I could not bring myself to alter the perfection that was on my plate.
“I love serving food to customers and them enjoying it.” Said Yamil simply, with a confident smile.
