Vinyl Minds continued working on their first batch of songs while making special appearances, including a short set at the memorial benefit for their friend and respected gulf coast musician Carlos Faul Jr. The band is only performing original tunes, and the open mic and pop up show format has been a great way for them to get on stages as they expand their catalog with the goal of performing full length shows in the coming months.
“Pretty much every show or anything that we’ve played for, we’ve debuted at least one song at,” said Dacota “I love doing these gigs, these pickup gigs.”
The sound of Vinyl Minds is a blend of the members’ varied tastes, with an extra bit of love for rock and roll’s earlier eras, when vinyl records ruled the scene. Their overall alt rock vibe is led by Devon’s warm and melodic vocal style and crunchy, Hendrix-esque guitar sound, and is expanded by the inclusion of dynamic and sometimes funky grooves, as well as the occasional keys section.
“It’s a little bit of everything,” Dacota said. “We’re pop rock, we’re blues rock, were stoner rock, we’re all of that… It’s like controlled chaos. It’s pretty cool.”
“We like to sprinkle a little bit of prog on there too actually,” added David. “Just a little touch… an odd signature or something here and there, just to break up the commonality a little bit…”
Once the band are off and playing full length shows with their newly dialed in sound, they are looking forward to laying all of this down and releasing an album which, and I can only speculate, would probably sound great on Vinyl. In the shorter term, Vinyl Minds are excited for the upcoming debut of their next brand new song entitled “Rule of Seven.” The band recently went into the studio at Red Radio Productions to record a live performance including the new song, which will stream to online audiences on an upcoming episode of The Red Radio Show, available on Facebook.
Keep up with Vinyl Minds and the upcoming happenings of David, Devon and Dacota at the band’s new Facebook page. Live performance videos can be found there for a taste of the band’s sound, as well as any future dates and new releases.
